AEO vs. GEO vs. SEO: what is the difference?

SEO, answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization compared: what each targets, where they overlap, and how to prioritize them without wasted effort.

Search used to mean one thing: ranking on Google. Now there are featured snippets, voice assistants, AI Overviews and chat assistants, and a set of acronyms has grown up around them. Here's what each term means in practice, and why you don't need three separate strategies.

SEO: search engine optimization

SEO improves how your pages rank in traditional search results. It covers technical health (crawling, indexing, speed), content relevance and quality, and authority (links, reputation). The goal is a click from a ranked listing.

AEO: answer engine optimization

AEO focuses on being the direct answer to a question, for example in featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes and voice assistant responses. It emphasises concise answers, question-based headings and well-structured content.

GEO: generative engine optimization

GEO focuses on how AI systems that write answers, like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, include, describe and cite your brand. It adds attention to brand consistency and independent mentions across the web, because these systems often combine many sources into one response.

How they compare

  • Target: SEO targets ranked links. AEO targets direct answers. GEO targets AI-written responses.
  • Main success signal: SEO is rankings and clicks. AEO is snippet or answer ownership. GEO is mentions, citations and sentiment.
  • Shared foundation: crawlable pages, helpful content, clear structure and trust signals
  • Main difference: GEO puts more weight on how you're described across third-party sources

Where they overlap

Most of the work counts three times over. A clear, well-researched service page with direct answers, accurate structured data and strong reviews behind it helps your rankings, your chances of owning a snippet and your chances of appearing in an AI answer. That's why it rarely makes sense to split budgets three ways.

How to prioritize

  • Fix technical SEO foundations first, because none of the three works without crawlable, indexed pages
  • Build pages that fully answer your customers' questions
  • Strengthen trust: reviews, credentials and independent mentions
  • Measure across all three: rankings and clicks, snippet appearances, and AI mentions

Frequently asked questions

Which matters most for a small business?

SEO foundations come first, because AEO and GEO build on them. Then decide based on how your customers search.

Is AEO still relevant with AI search?

Yes. Clear, direct answers help featured snippets and are also easier for AI systems to use.

Do I need different content for each?

Usually not. Well-structured, helpful content serves all three.

How do I measure GEO?

Track whether you're mentioned, cited and recommended for a fixed set of questions across AI platforms, and how that changes over time.

Are these terms standardised?

Not entirely. People use AEO and GEO slightly differently, so focus on the underlying practices.
