How to optimize your website for Google AI Overviews

How Google AI Overviews choose sources, and practical ways to make your pages clearer, more trustworthy and easier to cite, without chasing gimmicks.

AI Overviews show an AI-generated summary at the top of many Google searches, with links to the sources it used. Being one of those links can bring visibility and clicks. Google says there's no special markup required: pages need to be indexed and eligible to appear in search with a snippet, and the usual SEO best practices apply.

In practice, that means AI Overview optimization is mostly good SEO done properly, with extra focus on clear answers and trustworthiness.

1. Make sure you're eligible

  • The page is indexed (check it with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console)
  • No nosnippet or restrictive robots directives on the content you want cited
  • Important text is visible in the HTML, not only inside images or scripts
  • The page loads reliably and works well on mobile

2. Answer the question directly

AI Overviews tend to appear for informational and comparison searches. Put a direct answer near the top of the relevant section, in one or two clear sentences, then expand with detail, examples and caveats. Use descriptive H2s and H3s that mirror the questions people ask, so each section is easy to understand on its own.

3. Cover the topic properly

Overviews often answer several related questions at once. A page that covers the main question and the natural follow-ups, such as cost, timing, alternatives and common mistakes, is more useful than one that answers a single narrow point. Link related pages together so Google can see you cover the whole topic.

4. Show experience and trust

Google's quality guidelines put weight on experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T). Explain who's behind the content and why they're qualified, cite reliable sources for factual claims, keep information current and be specific. First-hand detail, like how you actually do the work, is hard to fake and valuable to readers.

5. Use clear formatting

Short paragraphs, lists for steps or criteria, and tables for comparisons make content easier to read and easier to summarise. Format for people first. Clean formatting helps machines too, but stuffing pages with lists purely to be extracted reads poorly.

6. Keep structured data accurate

Structured data isn't required for AI Overviews, but accurate Organization, Article, Product or LocalBusiness markup helps Google understand what a page is and who published it. Make sure markup always matches what's visible on the page.

7. Measure what you can

Search Console includes AI Overview appearances in your overall Search performance data, but doesn't currently report them separately. Watch impressions and clicks for the searches you care about, and check those searches by hand from time to time to see whether you're cited. The AI Visibility report includes Google AI Overviews alongside the other major AI platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Is there special markup for AI Overviews?

No. Google says no special markup or files are needed. Pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

For some searches, users get their answer without clicking. Being cited as a source can still bring visibility and qualified visits.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Snippet controls like nosnippet limit how your content is shown, including in AI features, but they also affect regular snippets.

Does FAQ schema get me into AI Overviews?

There's no evidence that any single markup type guarantees inclusion. Clear, visible answers matter more.

Do AI Overviews show up for local searches?

They can, though local searches also often show the map pack. Strong local SEO supports both.
