Shopify SEO
SEO for Shopify stores that want more organic sales
Shopify handles a lot of SEO basics, but product and collection pages still need work to rank. See where your store is losing visibility.
The problem
Sound familiar?
Thin product descriptions
Manufacturer copy or a single line of text gives Google little reason to rank a product page.
Collection pages with no content
A grid of products with no intro or helpful copy struggles for category searches.
App and theme weight
Apps and heavy themes add scripts that slow storefronts down on mobile.
What it costs
Why it's worth fixing
- Product pages that never rank for the searches shoppers use
- Reliance on paid ads for every sale
- Slow mobile pages that lose customers before checkout

Checklist
Shopify SEO checklist
- Product and collection pages each have a unique, descriptive title and meta description
- Product descriptions are your own words, not copied from the manufacturer
- Internal links use the main /products/ URL, not the /collections/.../products/ version
- Out-of-stock products that won't return are redirected to a close alternative
- Image alt text describes the product, and images are a sensible size
- Apps you no longer use are uninstalled, including any leftover code
Worked example
Example: duplicate product descriptions across a store
A Shopify store selling kitchenware uses the supplier's descriptions for 200 products. The same text appears on dozens of other retailers' sites, and the store rarely ranks for product searches.
They start with the 20 best-selling products: rewrite descriptions with real use details and dimensions, add customer questions as an FAQ, and write a short introduction for each main collection.
Troubleshooting
If something isn't working
Search Console reports duplicate product URLs
Shopify canonicals usually handle this. Make sure your theme links to /products/ URLs directly.
Collection pages rank poorly
Add a useful introduction and make sure the collection is linked from the main navigation.
Store got slower over time
Review installed apps. Many add scripts to every page even when not in use.
