How to get your business mentioned in ChatGPT answers

What influences whether ChatGPT mentions your business, and the practical steps that improve your chances, from clear entity information to third-party mentions.

More people now ask an AI assistant for recommendations, such as "best accountant for small businesses in Denver", instead of scrolling through search results. If ChatGPT doesn't know about your business, or doesn't trust what it knows, you won't appear in that answer at all.

No one can guarantee that an AI model will mention a particular business. What you can do is make your business easier to understand, easier to verify and easier to find in the sources these systems draw on.

How ChatGPT forms its answers

ChatGPT can answer from what it learned during training, and when browsing or search is enabled, it can also look at live web results. In both cases it depends on what's been published about you online: your website, directories, reviews, news coverage and discussions. When those sources describe you consistently and in detail, the model has more to work with.

1. Say clearly what you do, for whom and where

Vague taglines don't help a model understand you. Your homepage and About page should state plainly what the business is, what it offers, who it serves and where it operates. Use the same wording across your site, your Google Business Profile and your social bios so the information is consistent.

2. Publish pages that answer real questions

AI answers tend to draw on content that directly answers the question someone asked. Create service pages with specifics like what's included, typical timelines, price ranges where you can share them, and who the service suits. Add an FAQ section built from questions customers actually ask you. Clear, well-structured answers are easier to pull out and quote.

3. Earn mentions on sites other than your own

Recommendations usually reflect what independent sources say. Being listed in reputable industry directories, included in "best of" roundups, covered by local press, reviewed on major platforms and mentioned in community discussions all add evidence that you're a credible choice. Your own website alone is rarely enough.

4. Build a strong review footprint

Reviews on Google and industry platforms are widely visible online and often describe exactly what you're good at. A steady flow of detailed, genuine reviews gives both people and AI systems material that supports recommending you.

5. Make your site easy to crawl

If AI crawlers and search engines can't access your pages, they can't use them. Check that robots.txt isn't accidentally blocking crawlers you want, that your important content is in the HTML rather than hidden behind scripts or logins, and that your pages are indexed in Google and Bing. Many AI search features lean on these search indexes.

6. Use structured data to clarify facts

Organization and LocalBusiness schema confirm your name, address, contact details and links to your official profiles. It won't get you mentioned on its own, but it removes ambiguity. Our article on schema and AI visibility explains what it can and can't do.

7. Check what AI says today

Before changing anything, find out where you stand. Ask the questions your customers would ask and note whether you're mentioned, how you're described and which competitors come up instead. Do it regularly, because answers change. The AI Visibility report runs this across several platforms and question types in one go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

There's no paid placement in standard ChatGPT answers, so visibility comes from what's published about you online.

How long before ChatGPT starts mentioning my business?

There's no fixed timeline. Answers that use live search may reflect changes sooner than ones that rely only on training data.

Does ranking on Google help with ChatGPT?

Strong organic visibility and a good reputation online tend to help, especially when the assistant searches the web, but it's not a direct one-to-one link.

Why does ChatGPT describe my business incorrectly?

Usually because of outdated or inconsistent information online. Update your own channels and the major listings so they all agree.

Should I block AI crawlers?

That's a business decision. Blocking them may reduce how much these systems can learn about your content.
