DIY competitor analysis for SEO
Competitor analysis is the fastest way to improve SEO. Use real data from top-ranking sites instead of guessing what works in your market.
Every keyword you want already has a page ranking for it. That page is a free brief: it tells you the format, depth and angle that currently satisfies the query. Competitor analysis is simply reading that brief properly.
Step 1: Identify your real SEO competitors
Search your priority keywords and note who ranks. These are your SEO competitors — often not the businesses you compete with locally. Directories and national brands may dominate some queries, which is itself useful information.
Step 2: Find the keyword gaps
List the terms competitors rank for and you don't. Filter for commercial intent and realistic difficulty. What's left is your content roadmap for the next six months.
Step 3: Study their best pages
- How the page is structured and how long it is
- Which questions it answers that yours doesn't
- What proof it offers — reviews, case studies, credentials
- How internal links funnel authority towards it
Step 4: Beat it, don't copy it
Matching a competitor's page gets you a similar result at best. Add the thing they left out — clearer pricing, a real example, a better explanation — and you have a reason to outrank them.
